What can be tested?
Mold, asbestos, and soot can be tested in a wide range of environments and items—residences such as houses, apartments, and mobile homes; nontraditional living spaces like RVs; and even vehicles like cars. Testing can target building materials (drywall, insulation, plaster, ceiling tiles, floorboards), HVAC systems and ductwork, carpeting and upholstery, window sills and basements, attics, crawlspaces, and surfaces where soot accumulates after fires. For asbestos specifically, samples are often taken from suspect materials such as vinyl flooring, pipe insulation, textured ceilings, and cementitious products. Mold testing includes air samples, surface swabs, and bulk material samples from damp areas, while soot testing focuses on particulate deposition on walls, ceilings, and furnishings. Professional assessment determines appropriate sampling methods to accurately identify contamination and guide remediation.
